Several Rhode Island librarians were among the 215 library staff members representing 45 states at the Project Compass National Convening in Washington, D.C., on April 25 and 26. Representing RI were: Lauren Miklovic, Library Program Specialist/State Data Coordinator, OLIS; Maryanne Berry, Information Services Librarian, Cranston Public Library; Joyce May, Adult Services Librarian, East Providence Public Library; Paul Martin, Coordinator of Reference Services, Pawtucket Public Library; and Michelle Novello, Program Coordinator, Providence Community Library.
“Working together, libraries and the workforce system are making a real difference in communities across the United States,” said Susan Hildreth, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and one of the guest speakers. The convening was an opportunity for participants to share stories of patron impact and to work together to learn about common challenges, as well as to find new, 21st century solutions to support their local economies. Central to this was sharing ideas that will support of public libraries’ efforts to meet the imperative and mounting needs of communities nationwide impacted by the economic downturn.
