75th Anniversary of World War II

The 75th Anniversary of World War II Allied Forces’ Victory in Europe is Friday, May 8, 2020. Rhode Island libraries are encouraged to participate in commemorating the service and sacrifice of the state’s World War II veterans. Free resources are available for creating and promoting programs, commemorative events, and projects.
World War II Foundation
The Rhode Island-based World War II Foundation recently launched an educational initiative that provides members of the public with free online access to films produced by the Foundation. In addition to access to the films, the World War II Foundation website provides many resources that libraries will find useful for programming and answering patron questions.
U.S. Department of Defense, Commemorating World War II
The Department of Defense (DOD) Commemorating World War II website has useful resources such as:
- a “Stories” section about veterans or military units,
- a timeline of major WWII events,
- videos and photographs,
- news stories about current events related to WWII,
- speeches, and more.
A V-E Day Event Toolkit was developed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Office of Public Affairs
Libraries can request support from DOD for World War II Commemoration events. Support can be requested for:
- Civilian and/or military speakers,
- DOD participation in planning and/or cohosting event,
- Promotion of events on DOD’s WWII75 website and/or social media sites.
