The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society will use its grant to improve and enhance the visitor experience and increase opportunities for learning at its two historic sites—the Old Washington County Jail and Hale House—through the installation of interpretive wayside signage. Typically used at historic sites and national parks to mark the presence of a significant feature and to encourage a pause, waysides combine text with graphics to interpret landscape and historic events while encouraging visitors to observe and experience the site more fully. With wayside signage, the historical society will provide information and interpretation at times when its sites are not staffed or closed.

The Newport Art Museum will use its grant to support the expansion of MUSE, a school-to-career initiative that orients high school students to the management and administration of museums and cultural institutions through hands-on and classroom learning, multiple site visits, and mentoring. Developed in partnership with community leaders, MUSE is designed to strengthen museum-community connections, inspire and educate youth about careers in arts administration and museum management, and cultivate a professional workforce. The Museum will expand the program by providing additional sections and offerings of the coursework within schools and establishing paid internships for students.

IMLS Announces Second Heritage Health Index
By Donna DiMichele | September 5, 2013
IMLS Announces Second Heritage Health Index
Heritage Preservation, working in cooperation with IMLS, will conduct a second Heritage Health Index. The original survey, conducted nearly 10 years ago, was the first comprehensive study to assess the condition of U.S. collections. It examined the state of preservation across the entire spectrum of collecting institutions, large and small, from internationally renowned art museums and research libraries to local historical societies and specialized archives. The results were published in the groundbreaking A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections and reported that 4.8 billion artifacts held in public trust were at risk and that 190 million were in need of immediate care.
Heritage Preservation and IMLS have entered into a $338,554 cooperative agreement to complete the study in 2015. The project will receive an additional $100,000 of support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Information Literacy Month Planned for RI
By Donna DiMichele | August 16, 2013
August 15 – The Rhode Island Library Association (RILA) is closely collaborating with School Librarians of Rhode Island (SLRI) to have October declared Information Literacy Month in Rhode Island for the second year in a row. A proclamation proposal has been sent to Governor Lincoln Chafee in the hope that Rhode Island will join over 20 other states (so far) currently on board for the National Forum on Information Literacy (NFIL) 2013 Information Literacy campaign.
According to NFIL, Information Literacy Awareness Month is, “about empowering every citizen in our nation and around the world with the 21st century skill set to achieve educational, professional, and personal success… ultimately, sustaining our long term economic future.”RILA and SLRI strongly support this initiative and believe it can have a positive impact on the citizens of our state. Through this proclamation, Rhode Island recognizes what President Obama designated in 2009 as skills that every American must gain in order to be engaged and informed participants in the digital age.
RILA Membership Committee Co-Chair and Head of Instructional Services at the University of Rhode Island, Mary MacDonald, brought the NFIL initiative to RILA’s attention and asked us to join the cause. With her help, we crafted a proclamation that speaks to the needs of Rhode Islanders of all ages. Hopefully it will gain the Governor’s support again this year!
As you plan library programs and events for the October calendar, please consider celebrating and promoting Information Literacy Awareness month with us. Thank you!
