The 2014 Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is May 15th. On that day, designers, developers, usability professionals and everyone else is encouraged to take an hour to experience first hand the impact of digital accessibility. Use a mobile device to caption a video. Follow YouTube or 3Play Media for Vimeo information to add captions. Register to attend one of the In Person public events. Libraries and Museums Can Help Feed Children This Summer

Every summer when school ends, millions of kids and teens are at risk of going hungry because they no longer have access to the free or reduced-price meals they received when they were in school. The USDA has created the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to cover this summer meal gap. However, SFSP is one of the most underutilized government programs, with only about 16 percent of eligible kids participating. This is why the USDA is reaching out to libraries and museums.
You, as a museum or library, can get involved in so many ways. USDA Food and Nutrition Service is hosting two webinars for the Institute of Museum and Library Services to talk about ways that you can get involved in the Summer Food Service Program.

Libraries and Broadband: Urgency and Impact

“Libraries and Broadband: Urgency and Impact” – a public hearing that you can join in person, on YouTube or through Google+ (live stream)
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), has issued an invitation to a public hearing, “Libraries and Broadband: Urgency and Impact.” Federal Communications Commission Chairman Thomas Wheeler will make opening remarks, and expert panelists from across the library, technology, and public policy spectrum will explore the issue of high-speed broadband in America’s libraries.

The hearing will be live streamed on YouTube and Google+.
IMLS is charged with advising the President and Congress about the library, museum, and information service needs of the American public. As the FCC embarks on efforts to modernize the e-rate program, IMLS is conducting this hearing to establish a public record on the need for and impact of high-speed broadband connectivity in America’s libraries and to document forward-looking strategies to improve broadband connectivity.
You can also provide comments for the public record. Comments received by Monday, April 24, will be published on the agency’s website. Send comments to comments@imls.gov.
IMLS Director Susan H. Hildreth will chair the hearing along with members of the National Museum and Library Services Board, including Christie Pearson Brandau, Iowa; Charles Benton, Illinois; Winston Tabb, Maryland; and Carla Hayden, Maryland, who will lead three panels during the hearing:
The Vision: What happens when we get it right? This panel will explore innovative practices and partnerships and new strategies that have the potential to serve individuals and communities well.
The Data: Panelists will explore what we know about broadband connections and services in America’s libraries.
Moving Forward: During this section, we will explore solutions for connectivity in libraries.
In addition to Thomas Wheeler, speakers and panelists will include Reed Hundt, former Chairman of the FCC; Clarence Anthony, Executive Director of the National League of Cities; Chris Jowaisas, Senior Program Officer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and many others. Who loves libraries?

The Pew Research Internet Project has just released a new study that looks at the typology of public library engagement in America: From Distant Admirers to Library Lovers–and beyond. The study breaks library users and non-users into various groups, finding that those who use libraries most tend to be younger, better educated, more technically savvy, and more engaged in their communities. Equally striking are the groups who don’t use libraries as much – or at all.
Pew Research is accessible and interesting reading and tells us a lot about who uses libraries, and who doesn’t. Check it out.

Virtual Road Trip to RI Libraries

Second in Series: Webinar on Citizenship and Immigration for Public Librarians

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services representatives to discuss education resources, citizenship activities for libraries, and more.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and USCIS continue their series of free webinars for public libraries about immigration and U.S. citizenship topics with a second webinar on March 6.
The USCIS Citizenship Education and Initiatives presentation will build on many of the topics discussed in the first USCIS-IMLS webinar held on February 4, 2014. Specifically, this webinar will highlight USCIS educational resources related to citizenship and the naturalization process, as well as information on how libraries can actively engage in citizenship-related activities and events.
The webinar will also review USCIS resources designed to protect individuals from immigration services scams and discuss the types of assistance librarians can provide to immigrant patrons. It is not necessary to have participated in the first USCIS-IMLS webinar to participate in this session.
Registration: Register by March 4th. To register, follow this link for the USCIS Public Engagement Division email alert service, and enter your email address. Once you have entered your email, click on the “Subscriber Preferences” tab and then select “Event Registration.” Please provide the additional requested information to complete your registration.
