Archive, Document, Display, and Disseminate Grant Programs
Applications Due: January 13, 2017
Philanthropist Herman Rose created the Archive, Document, Display, and Disseminate (ADDD) Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation in 1986 to provide new incentives to strengthen libraries and other civic, cultural, and literacy-focused organizations and expand their role as community centers that stimulate dialogue around critical issues.
The ADDD Fund offers two grant opportunities. Grants are awarded annually. Library Challenge Grants provide added funding for library campaigns to meet local needs. Media Project Grants assure greater access to information through archiving, documenting, displaying, and/or disseminating information.

2017 Reading Across Rhode Island

has announced the 2017 Reading Across Rhode Island book.

Reading Across Rhode Island Honorary Chairs Judge Judith Colenback Savage and Judge Edward C. Clifton, both retired trial justices of the Rhode Island Superior Court and Distinguished Jurists in Residence at Roger Williams University School of Law, will lead a distinguished panel for an engaging introduction to the book’s themes of proximity, understanding, and justice.
Register on the Rhode Island Center for the Book website. Tickets are $15 and include one copy of the book. Light refreshments will be provided.

Author Bryan Stevenson will speak about his experiences in the criminal justice system.
Registration for Bryan Stevenson’s address will be available on the Rhode Island Center for the Book website in February.

ALA Statement on Diversity and Inclusion

In response to the divisive nature of this election season, American Library Association President Julie Todaro issued the following statement highlighting the important role that libraries and librarians play as we all seek common ground following the election:
After a contentious campaign season filled with divisive rhetoric, we are now hearing from our members and in the news media about incidents of bigotry and harassment within our communities. From children acting out in schools to adults participating in violent acts, it is clear that our nation is struggling in the wake of this election.
During times like these, our nation’s 120,000 public, academic, school and special libraries are invaluable allies inspiring understanding and community healing. Libraries provide a safe place for individuals of all ages and backgrounds and for difficult discussions on social issues. Our nation’s libraries serve all community members, including people of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, and the most vulnerable in our communities, offering services and educational resources that transform communities, open minds and promote inclusion and diversity.
As an association representing these libraries, librarians and library workers, ALA believes that the struggle against racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination is central to our mission. We will continue to support efforts to abolish intolerance and cultural invisibility, stand up for all the members of the communities we serve, and promote understanding and inclusion through our work.

PLA says: Nominate yourself, a colleague, or your library today!

The Public Library Association (PLA) service awards and grants highlight the best in public library service and honor those bringing innovation, creativity, and dedication to public libraries.
- The Allie Beth Martin Award honors a librarian who, in a public library setting, has demonstrated extraordinary range and depth of knowledge about books or other library materials and has distinguished ability to share that knowledge. A plaque and a $3,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1977 in honor of Allie Beth Martin. Sponsored by Baker & Taylor.
- The Romance Writers of America Library Grant is designed to provide a public library the opportunity to build or expand its romance fiction collection and/or host romance fiction programming. The grant consists of $4,500 to be used toward the purchase of books in print and/or audio format, author honorariums and travel expenses, and other applicable program expenses. Sponsored by the Romance Writers of America.
- The Baker & Taylor Entertainment Audio Music / Video Product Award is designed to provide a public library the opportunity to build or expand a collection of either or both formats in whatever proportion the library chooses. The grant consists of $2,500 of Audio Music or Video Products. Sponsored by Baker & Taylor.
- The Charlie Robinson Award honors a public library director who, over a period of seven years, has been a risk taker, an innovator and/or a change agent in a public library. The recipient should have been active in national and other professional associations and be known for developing and implementing programs which are responsive to the needs of community residents. The award consists of $1,000 and a gift. The public library director will be honored at the ALA Annual Conference. Sponsored by Baker & Taylor.
- The Demco New Leaders Travel Grant is designed to enhance the professional development and improve the expertise of public librarians new to the field by making possible their attendance at major professional development activities. Plaques and travel grants of up to $1,500 per applicant are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Sponsored by Demco, Inc.
- The EBSCO Excellence in Rural Library Service Award honors a public library serving a population of 10,000 or less that demonstrates excellence of service to its community as exemplified by an overall service program or a special program of significant accomplishment. A plaque and an honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Sponsored by EBSCO Information Services.
- The Gordon M. Conable Award honors a public library staff member, a library trustee, or a public library, that has demonstrated a commitment to intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights. The award consists of $1,500 and a plaque to be presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Sponsored by Library Systems & Services.
- The John Iliff Award honors the life and accomplishments of John Iliff, early adopter and champion of technology in public libraries, and recognizes the contributions of a library worker, librarian, or library that has used technology and innovative thinking as a tool to improve services to public library users. The award provides a $1,000 honorarium, a plaque and a bouquet of roses for the workplace. Sponsored by Innovative.
- The Upstart Innovation Award recognizes a public library’s innovative and creative service program to the community. A plaque and a $2,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Sponsored by Upstart, a Demco company.

Ezra Jack Keats Mini-Grant Program

29th Annual Ezra Jack Keats Mini-Grant Program Call for Proposals
The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, which fosters children’s love of reading and creative expression in amidst diverse cultures, celebrates the 29th year of its Mini-Grant program with a call for proposals. Press Release
Approximately 60 grants of up to $500 each will be awarded to qualifying teachers and librarians at public schools and libraries across the country. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2017, and decisions will be emailed to all applicants in early May, allowing educators to plan for the next academic year.

Apply for National Friends of Libraries Awards

United for Libraries is sponsoring the 11th annual National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 16-22, 2016.
Friends of the library groups across the country are celebrating by holding membership drives, book sales and special events, and officials are issuing proclamations to mark Friends of Libraries Week in their town or state. Libraries are also honoring their friends’ groups and saying “thank you” for all they do for their libraries. Friends groups are being highlighted in local media to demonstrate their importance in the library and community.
United for Libraries encourages friends’ groups who are celebrating to apply for the National Friends of Libraries Week awards. Two awards of $250 will be given to friends of the library groups for activities held during the celebration. Application materials are online and applications are due by Dec. 2, 2016.
If you want to have a friends group highlighted in an upcoming newsletter, United for Libraries will also be highlighting National Friends of Libraries Week activities in a newsletter. To submit your activities and photos, email them to united@ala.org.
Friends groups, library trustees and library staff can access a variety of online resources to help them celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week. Materials available include promotional ideas, editable publicity materials, camera-ready bookmarks, ideas from past celebrations and much more.

Tiverton Public Library Wins Architecture Award

The American Institute of Architects’ New England Chapter awarded Union Studio Architecture & Community Design with a 2016 Merit Award for their architectural design of the new Tiverton Public Library.
The 24,000 square foot building opened in June 2015. The project was funded in part by the State of Rhode Island via the Office of Library & Information Services (OLIS) through Public Library Construction Grant-In-Aid. OLIS provides grant-in-aid for the construction and capital improvement of any free public library in the state to provide better free library services to the public.
The new library includes numerous meeting, gathering and reading spaces, a cafe, business center and dedicated children’s, teen and local history spaces. The Tiverton project was chosen for the award because the American Institute of Architects’ New England Chapter felt the library was one of the best examples of institutional architecture completed by New England design firms.

Graphic Novel Grants for Libraries

The American Library Association (ALA) and the Will and Ann Eisner Family Foundation are now accepting applications for the 2017 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grants for Libraries, which recognize libraries for their role in the growth of graphic literature.
Each winning library will receive a grant award of $4,000 to support initiatives that align with the objective of the Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grants for Libraries. The grant award will consist of the following:
- $2,000 grant to purchase graphic novels from the distributor-partner (current partner is Diamond Comics Distributors),
- $1,000 grant to host a graphic novel-themed event at a library or another community location, and
- $1,000 grant to attend the ALA Annual Conference to receive their grant money. This grant can be used towards any of the following: conference registration, transportation, lodging and food.
In addition, from the book publishers and the Eisner Foundation, the winning libraries will also receive the following graphic novels, valued at approximately $3,000:
- The Will Eisner Library: A graphic novel collection of Will Eisner’s work and biographies about Will Eisner comprising approximately 75 books and;
- Graphic novels nominated for the current year’s Will Eisner Awards at Comic-Con International comprising approximately 100 books.

Information Literacy Month

October is Information Literacy Month! Recognizing the importance of information literacy as a key component in effective decision making and enhancing one’s ability to compete in the workforce and global economy, Governor Gina Raimondo has proclaimed October as Information Literacy Month. This is the fourth year that the Governor’s Office has recognized and supported the importance of information literacy.
The Information Literacy Action Round Table (ILART) of the Rhode Island Library Association (RILA) will celebrate information literacy month with an information literacy showcase, “Putting Information Literacy to Work!” at the Cranston Public Library on Thursday, October 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Public, school, and academic librarians will share programming successes that support Workforce Development. Featured services include job search resources, career education, support for small businesses, and employment programs. There will be simultaneous tabletop poster and multimedia presentations and the opportunity to network with presenters and other librarians.
Come join OLIS as we celebrate Information Literacy Month with RILA!
